Royal Caribbean’s next Chief Dog Officer will be named Dolly, according to an announcement by CEO Michael Bayley.

In a social media post, Bayley said that the name was chosen via a popular vote as part of a contest launched in August.

Passengers initially suggested seven potential names for the Golden Retriever, which will be part of the crew of the Hero of the Seas. Options included Hero, Scout, Marina, Pearl, Coco, Coral and Sandy.

Dolly was later added to the contest in homage to singer Dolly Parton, who passed away in Nashville in late August.

The new Chief Dog Officer will join Rover, Sailor and Skipper as part of Royal Caribbean’s “family dogs” project.

The dogs have joined the crew of the company’s Icon-class ships, starting with the Icon of the Seas in 2023.

The program is run through a partnership with American Humane Society, which ensures care and training for the pets.

Currently under construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland, the Hero of the Seas is scheduled to enter service in August 2027.

As the fourth ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, the LNG-powered vessel will offer seven-night cruises departing from PortMiami.

The itineraries sail to destinations in the Caribbean and the Bahamas, including the private island destination of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

The 250,800-ton vessel follows the Legend of the Seas, which entered service earlier this year as the third ship in the Icon series.

Spending its inaugural season in Europe, the Legend is currently offering weeklong cruises in the Western Mediterranean that visit Italy, Spain and France.

In November, the 5,610-passenger ship repositions to the Caribbean for itineraries departing from Fort Lauderdale.

According to the latest update of Cruise Industry News’ global cruise ship orderbook, three additional Icon-class ships are scheduled to enter service through 2030.
