Royal Caribbean’s CEO Michael Bayley is asking passengers for help to pick the name of the company’s next “Chief Dog Officer.”

The Golden Retriever will board the Hero of the Seas in 2027, as part of an initiative that has seen “family dogs” boarding Icon-class ships since 2023.

In a social media announcement, Bayley said that eight names are currently being considered for the new crew member.

After an initial vote, Royal Caribbean narrowed the options down to Hero, Scout, Marina, Pearl, Coco, Coral and Sandy.

Dolly was later added to the list in homage to Dolly Parton, who passed away in Nashville in late August.

“So, voting is open for the final round before it goes to the distinguished panel of judges (me) for the final decision,” Bayley said.

While passengers are asked to vote on a Facebook post, the timeline for the contest hasn’t been revealed.

Royal Caribbean’s Chief Dog Officer program is reportedly conducted in partnership with the American Humane Society.

As previously reported by Cruise Industry News, the deal is said to ensure top-tier care and training for the pets, which have their own handlers onboard.

Rover was the first Golden Retriever to join Royal Caribbean’s crew, boarding the Icon of the Seas in 2023.

Sailor and Skipper later joined the team, becoming “Chief Dog Officers” on the Star of the Seas and the Legend of the Seas, respectively.

As the fourth ship in Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, the Hero of the Seas is scheduled to enter service in August 2027.

The LNG-powered ship will offer cruises from PortMiami to destinations in the Western and Eastern Caribbean.

The weeklong itineraries will feature visits to the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

After the Hero, Meyer Turku is building three additional Icon-class ships for Royal Caribbean through 2030.
