With Destiny, Carnival Reuses Sixth Ship Name

Carnival Destiny unveilled

The new Carnival Destiny will be the sixth newbuild in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet to carry a previously used name.

The first Ace-class vessel joins the Mardi Gras, the Carnival Celebration, the Carnival Jubilee, the Carnival Festivale and the Carnival Tropicale.

While common among other brands, the practice was introduced by the company in 2018 with the reveal of the new Mardi Gras.

As the first ship in Carnival’s Excel series, the LNG-powered vessel reused the name of the brand’s first-ever ship, the Mardi Gras.

Built in the 1960s as an ocean liner, the original 30,000-ton Mardi Gras was the first ship to join the company’s fleet and remained in service through 1993.

After introducing the new Mardi Gras, Carnival reused names from Holiday-class ships for subsequent vessels in the series, debuting the new Carnival Celebration in 2022 and the new Carnival Jubilee in 2023.

Built in the 1980s, the original Jubilee and the original Celebration were in service for the company through 2004 and 2008, respectively.

The trend continues with the two additional Excel-class ships scheduled to enter service in 2027 and 2028.

Currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, the Carnival Festivale and the Carnival Tropicale will reuse names originally introduced in the 1970s and 1980s.

Set to enter service next year, the new Festivale will carry the name first used by Carnival’s third ship, which sailed between 1977 and 1996.

The new Tropicale will debut in 2028 with the name first introduced by the company’s first newbuild in 1985 and used through 2001.

With delivery scheduled for summer 2029, the new Carnival Destiny will reuse the name of a ship currently in service for Carnival.

The world’s largest cruise ship at the time, the original Destiny was built at the Fincantieri shipyard and entered service in 1996. Now sailing as the Carnival Sunshine, the 101,000-ton vessel was renamed in 2013, following a major refurbishment that extensively reconfigured its interior areas.

As the first ship in a series later known as the Destiny class, the vessel was followed by the Carnival Triumph in 1999 and the Carnival Victory in 2000.

The new Carnival Destiny will be the lead ship in the Ace-class series, which will also include three ships built at the Fincantieri shipyard.

Ranking among the largest cruise ships in the world, the 230,000-ton vessel will be the biggest in Carnival’s fleet, with a maximum capacity for 8,000 passengers. Sister ships are scheduled to enter service in 2029 and 2030.
