Resorts World One Completes 25 Years in Service

Resorts World One

The Resorts World One is completing 25 years of service in August.

Originally built for Star Cruises, the ship was delivered by the Meyer Werft shipyard on August 2, 1999.

Part of a two-ship order placed by the Asia-based company in 1995, the vessel was originally named SuperStar Virgo.

Along with its sister, the SuperStar Leo, the 2,000-guest vessel was built in Germany at a cost of $700 million. According to its original operator, the Virgo was designed to offer a cruise experience with a “touch of the Orient.”

After several years sailing for Star Cruises in various parts of Asia and Oceania, the SuperStar Virgo was transferred to Dream Cruises in 2019.

Positioned as a premium cruise line for the Asian market, the new brand, which was also part of Genting Cruise Lines like Star Cruises, renamed the vessel as the Dream Explorer.

The Dream Explorer offered cruises not only in Asia but also in Australia and New Zealand.

In early 2022, however, Dream Cruises shut down its cruise operations due to financial difficulties related to the pandemic.

The former SuperStar Virgo was then chartered to Resorts World Cruises, a new cruise line that also operates one of its former fleet mates, the Genting Dream.

Controlled by the Lim family, who owned and operated Genting in the past, the brand is part of the Resorts World hotel and casino group and offers cruises in Asia and, soon, the Middle East.

Now named Resorts World One, the ship has once again been offering cruises in Southeast Asia and the Far East since 2023.

The 70,000-ton vessel is scheduled to offer two- to five-night itineraries to Japan departing from Keelung, Taiwan through October.

During the 2024-25 cruise season, the ship marks Resorts World Cruises’ debut in the Middle East, with a series of two- and three-night cruises from Dubai.

Extending through next April, the itineraries feature visits to various destinations in Oman, UAE and Qatar.
