SS United States Conservancy to Offer Tour Opportunities

SS United States

The SS United States Conservancy will be offering tour opportunities this summer, the not-for-profit organization announced in a social media post, allowing a rare opportunity to get on the oceanliner.

“We have received many inquiries from supporters eager to visit the SS United States in Philadelphia before she must leave her current location,” the Conservancy said.

In mid-June, after a lengthy legal dispute, the US District Court in Philadelphia ruled that the retired ocean liner must vacate the berth at Port of Philadelphia’s Pier 82.

According to the Conservancy, the new tour opportunities will be offered to supporters who donate at the Benefactor Level ($250) and higher.

“Tour opportunities are limited because the vessel’s pier has long been closed to the general public, and all visitors must comply with security standards set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,” the group explained.

The Conservancy also stated that visits to the ship require accompanying specialist crew members for safety and security reasons, which impose significant costs.

“However, we are committed to doing what we can to enhance access to the ship for our generous supporters,” the organization added.

Nine additional tour opportunities will be offered on July 20, July 27, Aug. 2, Aug. 3, Aug. 16, and Aug. 17.

To secure a spot, supporters are asked to email the SS United States Conservancy at jbarrett@ssusc.org before making at least a $250 donation online at the group’s website.

After receiving the eviction notice, the organization also launched an urgent $500,000 effort to save the SS United States.

According to the group, the resources will be used to help cover the costs of the planned relocation of the 1952-built vessel and other critical expenses.

Earlier this month, the Conservancy announced progress in its search for a new pier for the SS United States, sharing a list of potential new locations being explored.
