Margaritaville at Sea is adding a new port to its itineraries, becoming the only cruise line to sail to Mexico’s Veracruz.
The destination will be part of the company’s recently announced new itineraries from the Port of Galveston.
Repositioning from PortMiami, the Margaritaville at Sea Beachcomber is currently scheduled to visit Veracruz once in early 2028.
The call is part of a seven-night cruise that also includes visits to two additional destinations in Mexico: Progreso and Cozumel.
According to Cruise Industry News’ files, Veracruz is not new to the market, having been involved with cruise tourism over the years and welcoming ships before.
In 1993, Mexican authorities were reportedly working to develop infrastructure to welcome vessels at the port.
Later, in 2008, CIN reported that the World was planning a visit to Veracruz as part of its continuous world cruise schedule. The residential cruise ship reportedly arrived at the port in early 2009.
Mexican media sources reported that Veracruz last welcomed a cruise vessel 11 years ago.
According to Diario del Istmo, the city is undergoing touristic and urban preparations for its return to the cruise industry.
Work reportedly includes improving the image of Veracruz’s historic port and preparation courses for service providers.
The port authorities were also said to be working on a new breakwater in Bahía Norte, which was deemed strategic for large-ship operations.
A separate report from Xeu Noticias published in 2024 noted that Mexico’s National Port System Administrators had already been working on a cruise project.
The local news source said at the time that a private company was interested in securing a pier concession to operate vessels in Veracruz.
While the interested party was not revealed, Xeu Noticias said that the plan was to include the port in itineraries to the Western Caribbean that sail from Galveston.
The news source added that the project would require further port dredging to allow the port to welcome some of the world’s largest cruise ships.
