Italy’s Port of Naples marked a milestone with the completion of its first LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation, performed for the Sun Princess.
The feat was the result of collaboration between Axpo, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) and Studio di Ingegneria Benvenuto & Associati (Studio Benvenuto), according to a press release.
The bunkering was performed using the Green Zeebrugge, a specialized vessel operated by Axpo.
Simone Rodolfi, head of origination and structured products at Axpo, said: “This achievement underscores our shared commitment to advancing sustainable shipping practices.
“The combination of Axpo’s bunkering expertise, combined with the engineering expertise of Studio Benvenuto alongside the technical verification capabilities of Bureau Veritas, is creating the infrastructure and frameworks necessary to support Italy’s cruise industry’s low emissions model.”
BV conducted a technical review of the Quantitative Risk Assessment prepared by Studio Benvenuto to verify compliance with applicable Italian maritime regulations.
“Bureau Veritas is delighted to have supported the advancement of LNG bunkering operations in Italy,” added Alberto Moroncelli, marine & offshore Italy and Monaco director at BV.
“Through rigorous technical review and verification, we help ensure that innovative operations are conducted safely and in compliance with the highest regulatory and industry standards. This project demonstrates the critical role of technical assurance in supporting the maritime sector’s transition toward lower-carbon operations.”
The Sun Princess is currently sailing its Western Mediterranean itineraries, with the season running from April through October 2026.
