Holland America Evolution: Single Cabins Get New Design; Dynamic Pricing

  • July 21, 2026
Oosterdam

Described as the largest fleet investment in the company’s 153-year history, the Holland America Evolution project will not only add new features but also revamp the stateroom offerings of six ships.

According to the plans announced for the first two ships included in the initiative, the Oosterdam and the Zuiderdam, one of the most significant changes will be the addition of new balcony cabins for solo travelers.

President Beth Bodensteiner said the new staterooms are being added due to their popularity on other ships in the fleet.

In a first for Holland America, these new cabins will introduce balconies for solo travelers, addressing the demand for premium accommodations.

“We are seeing increased demand for balconies and above,” Bodensteiner said, noting that this is an industry-wide trend.

“For a few years now, solo travelers are becoming more and more common, and people want experiences that are better geared toward them and their desire to travel on their own,” she continued at an industry event earlier this year.

The new Solo Verandahs will address this trend not only with a private balcony but also with a new design that caters to the needs of these guests.

“Our overarching goal was to create and design an experience that was focused on a solo traveler,” explained My Nguyen, Holland America’s director of interior design & interior operations.

“With that in mind, every centimeter of space is thought of. Everything, from well-appointed, comfortable, and functional elements to a ‘home-away-from-home’ feel, you’ll see in these designs,” she continued.

Nguyen noted that, even though the staterooms have square footage designed for a single traveler, they offer a very comfortable, very luxurious and very beautiful experience.

The staterooms were also designed with sustainability in mind, she added, highlighting that everything from the materiality of the carpets, the furniture, and the headboards has a sustainability strategy to it.

Bodensteiner said the 30 Solo Verandahs will be added to the Oosterdam and dynamic pricing will be used for bookings of the new rooms.

“So based on the demand, we will turn that pricing up and down to get the right demand for those staterooms,” she explained. “I anticipate pretty strong demand, but I think that they will end up being a better value for our solo travelers than what they have today.”

Bodensteiner addedthat solo guests should not expect to pay fares that are half the price of double-occupancy cabins.

“There are only 30 of these solo cabins; we will price those based on the individual demand for that particular itinerary and sailing.”

The Solo Verandahs will make their debut onboard the Oosterdam in late 2027 and are also scheduled to be added to the Zuiderdam at a later date.

Four additional ships are also scheduled to undergo refits as part of the Evolution program: the Westerdam, the Noordam, the Eurodam and the Nieuw Amsterdam. Details and a timeline of the further refurbishments will be announced at a later date.
