Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines has been awarded Silver Carbon Literate Organization (CLO) status, becoming the first cruise line to achieve the recognition. 

The award was presented at The Carbon Literacy Project’s seventh annual CLO Awards on June 3, the cruise line said in a statement. 

Fred. Olsen added that the recognition reflects its ongoing commitment to helping its employees understand and then reduce the carbon impact of daily operations and move towards a net-zero future.

“Achieving Silver Carbon Literate status is a proud moment for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. As the first in the cruise industry to achieve Carbon Literate Organization (CLO) status, it marks an important milestone and reflects the genuine commitment of our colleagues to better understanding our carbon impact – and to taking meaningful, informed action in support of a more responsible future for our sector,” said Dominic Simpson, sustainability manager at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. 

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines achieved Bronze Carbon Literate accreditation in November 2025, delivering Carbon Literacy training to 88 employees across 17 departments since then. 

The program has now reached 40 percent of the workforce, strengthening climate awareness across the business, according to the statement. 

The practical actions resulting from it range from the digitalization of selected shipboard services to the implementation of AI-powered food waste monitoring technology onboard the Bolette. 

“Carbon Literacy is an essential skill, vital to every thriving industry and workplace. Nothing proves this quite like a major player in a high-impact industry gaining Carbon Literate Organization accreditation,” noted Dave Coleman, co-founder and managing director at The Carbon Literacy Project.
