The new Mitsui Ocean Sakura will introduce new spaces that embody Mitsui Ocean Cruises’ FUNATABI philosophy, the company announced in a press release.

Debuting in September 2026, the Japanese-flagged ship will showcase the concept, which is said to promote “beautiful encounters with Japan,” to international guests.

Mitsui added that the refreshed spaces will offer a one-of-a-kind luxury experience that is authentically Japanese and unique to the cruise industry.

The company also stated that the Sakura will be the first Japanese-flagged cruise ship available to North Americans.

Currently in service as the Seabourn Sojourn, the 458-guest vessel will have its itineraries announced and open for sale in early 2026.

“As we designed the onboard atmosphere of Mitsui Ocean Sakura, we drew inspiration from the traditions and spirit of our past ships,” said Tsunemichi Mukai, president of Mitsui Ocean Cruises.

“Our hope is that everyone who sails aboard our newest vessel will feel a lasting connection to Japan through shared cultural experiences between local and international guests.”

Highlights of the ship’s onboard offerings include the Restaurant Sakura, which will be the largest onboard, serving chef-prepared dishes of Japanese and Western cuisine.

The Sakura will also offer the Sushi Bar Shiosai, which will serve freshly prepared sushi, small dishes and sake, as well as the Terrace Restaurant Yae.

According to the company, the latter was named after the Japanese word for “multi-layered” and will offer a self-service choice of seasonal dishes prepared with local ingredients, including Japanese favorites, Asian specialties and Western cuisine.

Returning after its debut onboard the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, Hokusai Fine Dining will also be available onboard the new ship.

The specialty venue is part of the cruise line’s partnership with Chef Kiyomi Mikuni and is said to offer a unique mix of Japanese flavors with traditional French cuisine.

Other highlights onboard the Sakura include the Bar Umi, which is named after the Japanese word for the sea.

Located on one of the highest decks of the ship, the space will offer ocean views, as well as light bites during the morning. Umi will also serve specialty cocktails, Japanese whisky, wines and live musical performances in the evening.

Located on Deck 8, the ship’s pool deck will be renamed the Grand Pool. The space is said to offer a spacious, resort-like atmosphere complete with two heated whirlpools, deck chairs and tables. New to the Mitsui Ocean Sakura, the deck will also offer a footbath.

The new ship is also bringing back venues that debuted onboard the Mitsui Ocean Fuji, including Mitsui Ocean Square, Ocean Stage and Spa & Wellness Kodama.

Mitsui said that the Sakura will offer a wide range of itineraries throughout Japan that provide access to “hidden gems.”

The company added that with its intimate size, the vessel is able to visit smaller ports, remote islands and scenic bays that larger vessels cannot reach, such as the Seto Inland Sea, Okinawa and Hokkaido.
