Golf Tournament Organizers Consider Chartering Cruise Ships

  • November 15, 2025
Ships in Belem

Cruise ships could be used as floating hotels during the upcoming Ryder Cup, which will take place in Limerick, Ireland, in 2027.

According to a report by The Times, the vessels could solve a shortage of accommodation in the region hosting the event.

The British newspaper noted that the option was considered during a meeting of the organizers, who expressed concern about the hotel capacity of Limerick.

Large cruise ships could dock at the nearby Port of Foynes, serving as “an option to facilitate staff or spectators for the event.”

Over 200,000 visitors are expected in Limerick due to the Ryder Cup, which is played in odd-numbered years between 12-member teams from the United States and Europe.

The next edition of the tournament will be held at Adare Manor, a golf course in County Limerick, between September 17 and 19, 2027.

In related news, the organizers of three major events recently chartered cruise ships for use as temporary accommodation (pictured above)

Two large vessels, the Costa Diadema and the MSC Seaview, are currently docked in the Brazilian town of Belém do Pará for the United Nations COP30.

Chartered by the local government, the ships are adding over 6,000 berths to the town’s hotel capacity.

A similar operation recently took place in South Korea, with Astro Ocean’s Piano Land and the Eastern Venus increasing accommodation capacity in Gyeongju.

The vessels docked at Yeongilman, a port in Pohang, to serve as floating hotels during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Another ship, the Costa Serena, will be used as a hotel during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, which will take place in Japan in 2026.

The Costa Cruises vessel will be chartered by organizers to serve as a floating Olympic village, accommodating athletes during the games.
