Scenic Eclipse Resumes Service After Repairs

Scenic Eclipse

After undergoing an unscheduled drydock earlier this month, the Scenic Eclipse resumed service in South America on Nov. 27, 2024.

The Scenic ship sailed from Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a 21-day expedition to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica.

Set to end in Ushuaia, the itinerary includes a five-day visit to the Antarctic Peninsula, in addition to the stops in South Shetland Islands.

The cruise marks the start of the ship’s 2024-25 season in the region, which will include a series of 13- to 23-night expeditions departing from Ushuaia.

In late March, the Scenic Eclipse is also set to offer itineraries to Brazil before crossing the Atlantic for a spring cruise program in the Mediterranean.

The vessel later offers expedition cruises to the Arctic, as well as the Norwegian Fjords and Northern Europe.

Built by the Uljanik Shipyard in Croatia, the Scenic Eclipse originally entered service for Scenic Cruises in mid-2019.

After experiencing propulsion issues this September, the 228-guest ship had to be taken out of service for repairs.

The vessel then sailed to the Gulf Copper shipyard in Galveston for the unplanned drydock. Working with ABB, Scenic replaced one of the vessel’s Azipod propulsors, with a new unit arriving in Texas via a specially chartered Antonov 124 aircraft.

Three cruises needed to be cancelled to accommodate the repairs, including a trip to the Caribbean and two to South America.

Affected passengers were offered alternative arrangements, the company said at the time of the cancellations.

Scenic also operates a second oceangoing ship, the Scenic Eclipse II. Built in 2023, the vessel is currently offering expeditions in New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Between December and February, the vessel is also scheduled to offer a series of 24- and 25-night cruises to Antarctica’s East Coast and the Ross Sea.
