HX’s Fridtjof Nansen Resumes Service in Antarctica

Fridtjof Nansen

The Fridtjof Nansen is back in service for HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions) after having one cruise cancelled due to a technical issue.

According to a statement shared by the company, the 2020-built ship welcomed guests back on Nov. 28, 2024.

“Following successful repairs onboard and our expert team working hard to resolve the issue, we’re excited to confirm that your voyage will go ahead as planned,” HX said in a message sent to booked guests.

After sailing from Ushuaia, the Fridtjof Nansen is now offering a ten-night expedition cruise that includes a four-day visit to Antarctica.

Alongside the Roald Amundsen and the Fram, the 530-guest vessel is set to offer a series of itineraries in the region during the 2024-25 season.

In mid-November, the deployment was interrupted by an isolated incident onboard the ship, which led to one cruise being cancelled for repairs.

“A contained technical issue occurred on our vessel, the Fridtjof Nansen. The ship continued its planned journey safely and arrived in Ushuaia today, Nov. 18, 2024,” HX explained at the time.

“We can confirm that all passengers and crew are safe and accounted for,” the company said while reassuring that the incident had not affected the safety or integrity of the vessel.

Technicians were immediately deployed to resolve the issue, HX added, noting that the safety and well-being of guests and crew remained a top priority.

“We sincerely apologize for this unforeseen disruption. We understand the emotional impact this has, especially given that many of these trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences,” the company noted.

HX also said that it offered full support for affected guests, including arranging flights, transfers and accommodation, as well as compensation offers.

Designed to offer cruises in remote and polar regions, the Fridtjof Nansen was built at the Kleven Verft in Norway as a sister to the 2019-built Roald Amundsen.
