Norwegian Breakaway Changes Itinerary to Avoid Tropical Cyclone

Norwegian Cruise Line is changing the itinerary of the current cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway to avoid a developing tropical cyclone in the Eastern Caribbean.

According to a statement sent to guests onboard, instead the vessel will now sail to destinations in the Western Caribbean.

“To circumvent the developing tropical cyclone and forecasted inclement weather, we have made the decision to take a safer, alternative route,” Norwegian Cruise Line said.

Originally scheduled to offer a seven-night cruise to Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, Tortola and the Bahamas, the Norwegian Breakaway sailed from PortMiami on August 11, 2024.

“Despite our best efforts, and with the weather disturbances out of our control, we have canceled our scheduled calls,” the company explained.

Instead, the Norwegian Breakaway is now set to visit Roatán, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” Norwegian added.

After completing its current sailing, the Norwegian Breakaway is set to reposition to the U.S. Northeast for a fall season in Bermuda, Canada and New England.

Sailing from New York City, the 4,000-guest ship offers five- to seven-night itineraries to several destinations in the region, including King’s Wharf, Halifax, Portland and Boston.

The Breakaway is then set to return to Miami in November, ahead of a winter cruise season in the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas also registered changes to its current cruise due to inclement weather in the Eastern Caribbean.

After leaving Miami on August 10, 2024, the vessel was diverted to the Western Caribbean to avoid adverse conditions.

Previously, in early August, several cruise ships were impacted by Debby, which made landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane.
