Ambassador Changes Visit to Amsterdam Due to Protests

The Ambition

Ambassador Cruise Line is amending one of its upcoming visits to the Dutch port of Amsterdam due to recent protests in the IJmuiden locks.

According to an update shared on the company’s social media profiles, the Ambition is no longer set to visit the port on Sunday, Aug. 18.

“Following last week’s protests, we have been informed by our local port agents in Amsterdam that Extinction Rebellion are planning to do the same again this week and prevent Ambition from entering the locks for her passage to the Amsterdam cruise terminal,” the company explained.

Extinction Rebellion’s protests previously disrupted the operations of the two cruise ships that were set to visit Amsterdam, the Jewel of the Seas and the Seven Seas Mariner.

“As a precaution, we have decided with the Captain to amend our call and berth at IJmuiden, which is approximately a one-hour drive to the city of Amsterdam,” Ambassador added.

The company also stated it arranged a complimentary transfer service for passengers who wish to go to the city.

“For those booked on our destination experiences, these will operate; however, the duration will be extended to allow for the additional transfer time to Amsterdam,” Ambassador added.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding,” the company added.

Sailing from England, the Ambition is offering a five-night cruise to Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition to Amsterdam, the itinerary also features a visit to Antwerp, as well as two days at sea.

Linking the North Sea to Amsterdam, the IJmuiden locks were blocked by Extinction Rebellion on Aug. 10 and Aug. 11.

According to a post on the website of the activist group, the coordinated acts were intended as a direct protest against pollution caused by cruise ships.
