Port of San Diego Celebrates Parks and Recreation Month

Shore power in San Diego

The Board of Port Commissioners, on July 9, approved a resolution endorsing Parks and Recreation Month, according to a press release.

The Port of San Diego’s Parks and Recreation department oversees 22 parks along the San Diego Bay waterfront, in addition to public boat launches, fishing piers, venue facilities, and a diverse array of public artworks.

Celebrated since 1985, Parks and Recreation Month raises public awareness about the role of open public space and recreation in communities and people’s lives. It encourages individuals and organizations to participate in outdoor recreational activities and allows governments and businesses to show their commitment to planning and maintaining green spaces in urban settings. This year’s national theme is “Where You Belong,” in recognition of park and recreation professionals across the country who foster a sense of belonging, community and connection.

“The Port of San Diego prides itself in offering community members and visitors 22 parks along the waterfront, giving the public access to some of the most precious views in San Diego,” said Chairman Frank Urtasun, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “As we reflect on what a true treasure our waterfront parks are, we would like to also recognize the many women and men working at the Port of San Diego that help maintain our parks, giving us all places where can connect, recreate, and enjoy open green space within our five urban member cities.”

The Port will introduce its 23rd park once construction of Sweetwater Park on the Chula Vista Bayfront is completed in the fall.
