The port of Visby is ready for the biggest ship of the season, which will be the Mein Schiff 3 from TUI Cruises calling on July 25.
The Swedish port’s season has 26 vessels on the books for 67 calls. Next year there are 60 calls scheduled, said Mats Eriksson of the port. But he expects more passengers as ship sizes move up.
Bigger ships calling in 2018 will be berthing at a brand new cruise pier, which has been developed to handle the biggest vessels and can host two megaships at once. The pier is coming in an estimated cost of $28 million.
The port itself is working all the time to be in top shape to accommodate cruise ships and their passengers
“The port is a bit unique in that it is relatively small but has a lot and varying traffic and is situated in the center of the World Heritage town of Visby,” said Eriksson.
