One Ocean Expeditions Growing Antarctica Programs

One Ocean Expeditions operates a pair of Russian research vessels on charter agreements in Antarctica, the Arctic and the Canadian Arctic.

“We’re growing our season in Antarctica,” said Andrew Prossin, managing director and founder. “We are starting a bit earlier and running a bit later, it’s in high demand.”

The company is doing more themed voyages, with scientists aboard, busy tracking and tagging whales in Antarctica in late March.

“It’s as close as you can get to traveling on a science project,” Prossin added. “That time of year the whales are very relaxed and near the surface.”

As far as market demand, Prossin said: “There is unprecedented demand. There is a strong desire among the traveling public to do something that is different and authentic.

“Our business is way up year-on-year,” he continued. “The educated traveling public wants to do these kinds of trips and we keep hearing the word authentic. Imagine going to a place where for hundreds of miles there is not a single scrap of evidence a human has been there.”
