The quaint port of Georgetown on Prince Edward Island in Canada is hoping to attract its first cruise ship call ever in the coming years after a long history of shipbuilding in the deep-harbor port.

“The town is just ready,” said Berni Wood, president, Berni Wood & Associates. “We have been designated as port ready and pursuing the cruise ship market.”

Wood was tapped as a consultant to help the town target cruise calls.

“We just started and there is interest, we are working with a few interested lines,” she said. “There is no limitation on ship size with four berths. Some lines are interested in doing a marine assessment, there is certainly potential.”

The longest of those berths has a 502-foot-long pier, with a channel depth of 37 feet and a large turning basin.

Located on a peninsula east of Charlottetown, Georgetown sees the meeting of three rivers.

“It’s a very interesting place. You can go kayaking, there are nature trails, birding and much more,” Wood said. “We are starting to package it with shore excursion product.”

Among other tours are beach clam bakes. The town has a number of artisan shops and a strong music and food culture.

“We’ve got a number of small wineries in the area, there are a lot of authentic food experiences,” Wood added.
