Greece: Volos: Strong Prospects

Shoreside in VolosThe historic port of Volos in Iolcos dates back to antiquity. It is where Jason built the Argo, and from where he set course for Colchis, later returning with the priestess Medea whom he married. Today the port of Volos is one of Greece’s biggest and features Mount Pelion, which towers over Volos, and the coasts of Pagasitikos Bay and the Aegean Sea.

Panagiotis Feugas, who is in charge of the port’s shipping and marina operations, is optimistic about the future despite the past few years, which have seen a steady average of 60,000 to 70,000 passengers visiting the port.

“The cruise business in our area has the potential for constant growth, if we constantly improve our infrastructure and services in order to stay competitive,” he said.

The Magnesia Port Fund is responsible for all the regional ports in Volos, and has taken an interest in cruise, looking to invest in infrastructure in the near future.
