Curacao is leaning toward a new berth, perhaps in time for the 2017-2018 cruise season, according to Dimitri Cloose, commercial manager for the port authority.
The new berth would enable the latest megaships to berth in Curacao.
“We have to develop as the industry is developing,” said Cloose. “We need to build bigger to accommodate the ships. Once you build a pier it will be there for 30 to 40 years, so it has to be a big one.”
Recently, Curacao has been welcoming more premium and luxury lines, and has a solid 2015 going, with summer calls from Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Pullmantur.
“We are expecting 115,000 passengers this summer, we used to have none,” said Cloose.
