Hyde Marine Posts 200 BWT System Deliveries

  • November 14, 2013

Hyde Marine, Inc announced it has delivered more than 200 Hyde GUARDIAN® Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Systems and commissioned more than 100 for operation on a variety of vessels around the world, based on sales of more than 275 units.

In commenting about the milestones, John Platz, President, Hyde Marine, said, “We are committed to providing the maritime industry with the most innovative and advanced ballast water treatment technology, which complies with approved and pending ballast water regulations. All of us at Hyde Marine are honored that so many ship owners and operators have chosen the Hyde GUARDIAN technology as their ballast water treatment solution.”

In April 2009, the Hyde GUARDIAN system became one of the first to receive IMO Type Approval – setting Hyde Marine on a course to be considered one of the maritime industry’s leading BWT companies.

August 2013 marked the 100th commissioning of the Hyde GUARDIAN BWT system onboard one of a series of 6200 DWT chemical tankers at Haichuan Shipyard in Shanghai, China for a Russian owner. The Hyde GUARDIAN HG500X, suitable for installation in hazardous areas, was commissioned in five days which included a full demonstration for the owner and Class surveyor. The project involved a weatherproof container deck installation and was Hyde Marine’s first project involving deep well ballast pumps.

Also since August 2013, Hyde Marine has completed 15 additional startups in Korea, Spain, Japan, United Kingdom, Turkey, and Singapore, which were conducted for a variety of ship types over a three to four day period on average.

With more than 100 years in the maritime industry and pioneering development of ballast water treatment technologies, Hyde Marine has also become the leading U.S. manufacturer and educator regarding regulations, technologies, installation experiences, and challenges facing this sector. Currently, the company has more than 30 retrofit projects, of which 18 Hyde GUARDIAN units have already been installed and commissioned, making Hyde Marine the most experienced solutions provider in the BWT retrofit market.

The chemical free Hyde GUARDIAN BWT process uses efficient, automatic backflushing depth filtration to remove sediment and organisms combined with a powerful ultraviolet disinfection system to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. The Hyde GUARDIAN BWT System offers a compact, modular design with low power consumption, low pressure drop, and simple, fully automatic operation, making it a technically attractive solution for any type of vessel.

In 2012, the Hyde GUARDIAN BWT System became one of the first to earn Alternate Management System (AMS) approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

AMS approval is a first step to achieving full USCG Type Approval and is an interim measure that allows these BWT systems to be used on vessels for five years after the vessel is required to comply with the USCG Ballast Water Discharge Standards. The five-year period is designed to allow the BWT manufacturer sufficient time to obtain U.S. Type Approval and to ensure the ship operator’s compliance with U.S. ballast water regulations.

The Hyde GUARDIAN BWT system was also the first accepted into the U.S. Coast Guard’s Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP), which facilitates the development of effective BWT system technologies for vessel owners seeking alternatives to ballast water exchange. STEP participation is available to all foreign and domestic vessels subject to the Coast Guard’s Ballast Water Management (BWM) regulations.
