ResidenSea’s condominium ship The World is expected to tie up at the Eastport Breakwater Pier Tuesday morning, October 9, 2012, at 8:30 am to spend the day visiting Eastport’s downtown historic district.
The ship is 644 feet long and is privately owned by residents of The World – 130 families from 19 countries – with an average occupancy of 150-200 residents and guests.
In addition, is an international compliment of long standing crew including approximately 260 staff from 40 countries.
This is a maiden visit for The World to the Ports of Eastport and Rockland.The World will first be clearing U.S. Customs in Eastport arriving from Saint Andrews, N.B. Canada.
The Eastport Port Authority is offering three tours to the Residents and Guests of The World including a “Eastport by Trolley” tour of the island. This guided tour will include history of this city and the area as well as discuss the tides, old sow whirlpool and the past and present attempts to harness the tides for electrical energy. The narrated tour includes stops at Raye’s Mustard Mill and the Barracks Museum and a full scenic drive around the island.
Downtown Eastport will have the blue vested “Ambassadors” along Water Street to assist the ship’s residents and guests as has become common practice when ships are in town. Many of the local businesses and galleries will be having special events, open houses and unique offerings for ship’s residents, guests, crew and for the many expected locals who may come to town to see the ship tied up at the Breakwater.
The Port of Eastport is a full service port with three large piers which can accommodate cruise ships and container ships.
This is the seventh and final visit of a cruise ship to the Port of Eastport, Maine this season. Eastport was a regular stop on Blount Small Ship Adventures Bay of Fundy cruises this summer out of Boston.
While in Eastport, the ship will be provisioning over 250 Lobsters and 100 pounds of lobster meat from a local lobsterman. The World plans to depart Eastport at 6 pm for an itinerary including several days in each Bar Harbor, Rockland, and Portland on its voyage south down the Atlantic coast
