FCCA: Healthy Competition Among Destinations

Addressing the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Convention in Puerto Rico, Governor Luis Fortuno said that there was a healthy element of competition among the destinations.

For 2011, Puerto Rico saw a dramatic increase in turn-around calls, the first such increase in some four years.  And for 2012, the island is projecting an eight percent bump in passengers, the first increase in five years.

While record Caribbean deployment is helping, so is a Cruise Industry Incentive Act that the Governor signed earlier this year.

According to Fortuno, the Act gives cruise lines a volume discount on head tax, as well as rebates on frequent turn-around calls, which is not uncommon among ports in competitive regions.

In addition is a rebate for calls lasting eight hours and more, as well as incentives and rebates on purchases from local suppliers and for goods made in Puerto Rico.
