The Port of San Diego and the City of National City are hosting three upcoming public meetings to identify development opportunities and other enhancements to portions of the National City Harbor District and Port tidelands in National City.
The first meeting will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the National City Railcar Plaza, 840 Bay Marina Drive, National City.
At that meeting, opportunities and constraints for the area will be discussed. Participants will also be asked to contribute their ideas for desired land uses.
Discussions will include topics such as increased public access, public amenities, visitor-serving uses, protection of maritime uses, enhancement of the working waterfront, compatibility of adjacent and transitional land uses, environmental compliance and protection of coastal resources.
Two more meetings will be held on June 15, 2011 and August 31, 2011. Both of these will be at the National City Railcar Plaza and will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A design charrette to develop a preferred land use plan is on the agenda for the June 15 meeting and a review of the complete planning study document is on the agenda for the August 31 meeting. It is anticipated that the planning study will go to the Board of Port Commissioners and the City Council of National City in early October.
The joint planning effort between the Port and the City of National City was presented to the Board of Port Commissioners at its December 7, 2010 meeting.
The Harbor District incorporates an approximately 108-acre area west of Interstate 5 at Bay Marina Drive. It borders the Sweetwater Channel to the south, Bay Marina Drive to the north, Tidelands Avenue to the west and Interstate 5 to the east.
The Port and the City of National City are hoping to take advantage of the successes of the Port’s Pier 32 Marina and National City’s Marina Gateway projects and are committed to working cooperatively on a framework that will protect maritime uses, enhance communication between the two agencies and lead to a land use plan that will benefit the public, the City of National City and the Port.
