Rio Moving Towards New Facilities?

Current Rio Berth (photo: Daniel Capella)Cruise Industry News has learned that Rio de Janeiro is moving towards major cruise infrastructure changes. Earlier this week the city announced that they plan to move 3 million passengers per season by 2016.

To meet this goal Rio plans to build a new pier that is perpendicular to where the current ships dock, according to a source in Brazil.

Currently passengers are processed in warehouses 1, 2 and 3. That is set to change as well as plans are on the table to turn those buildings into an event area with shops and restaurants by the 2013/2014 season. Warehouses 4, 5 and 6 would take over passenger processing.
