The Piraeus Port Authority reported a 16 percent increase in cruise passengers in 2008, for a total of 903,000 passengers – compared to 777,000 passengers in 2007. However, 2009 doesn’t seem quite as promising, “given the international credit crisis and recession, a negative trend should be considered likely,” a spokesperson said, adding that Piraeus is doing everything it can to garner more cruise tourism, and hoping for the best. “We take all necessary measures to provide a total service to passengers and cruise vessels.” Piraeus has 11 cruise-ship berths ranging from 606 to 977 feet in length, for a total of 5,560 feet, and three passenger terminals that have recently been renovated.
