Grass on Celebrity Solstice’s Lawn Club was already wearing thin when Cruise Industry News checked in on the half-acre plot Sunday after a two-night promotional cruise from Ft. Lauderdale.

Bocce ball, croquet, golf putting and general foot traffic had taken their toll on the grass, which had worn down in some areas to a sandy track. The grounds-keeping crew had set out signs around roped-off areas that read: “Lawn is Resting.”

“We’re noticing some wear,” said David Callahan, director of Marine Operations Support for Celebrity Cruises. “We’re going to have to be responsive to the wear patterns that develop.”

The grass was an Austrian Wash Sod, or Creeping Bentgrass as it is commonly called, Callahan said.

“The profile is about four to five inches and there is no soil,” he said. The grass grows on several layers of irrigated filter fabrics and pumice, lava rack and clay, and has no need of extra nutrients.

A Bermuda grass will likely be used as well in the future, Callahan said.
