State of the Cruise Industry

More than 15 million passengers are expected to cruise worldwide on some 294 ships in 2008, according to Cruise Industry News State of the Industry Report 2008- 2015, the leading industry trade publication. Nearly 11 million people will cruise on American-based ships, although only 85 percent will be Americans; more than 4 million will be Europeans on European ships; and the rest in Asia. Combined, the passengers are expected to generate an estimated $24.5 billion in revenues in 2008.

The 432-page report, which has been published annually since 1987, also projects that by 2012 the world fleet will consist of 334 ships carrying more than 20 million passengers. The largest companies will be Carnival Corporation with 11 different cruise lines under its corporate umbrella and a 46 percent market share; Royal Caribbean Cruises, with 6 brands and 25 percent of the market; NCL with 6 percent; and MSC Cruises with 5 percent. The rest of the market will be shared by more than 50 smaller operators.

Cruise Industry News tracks industry growth by market and by cruise line since 1992 through 2012 and projects company, industry and market development through 2015. The report tracks North American, European and Asian growth separately and divides the brands into market categories, since small, upscale ships do not necessarily compete with mega mass-market ships and are further categorized by luxury, adventure or niche markets.

Also shown is the traffic in the individual markets from Alaska to world cruises (in alphabetical order) and by brand, allowing the reader to track each market and each cruise line’s deployment.

Finally, the comprehensive book also serves as a directory, listing all the cruise lines with descriptions, key executives and ships; shipyards that build cruise ships, ports, key suppliers, including shipping agents and food and beverage companies.
