New Berth for Cruise Ships in Warnemünde

The first section of the newly built berth P8 in the shipyard basin in Warnemünde was put into operation on 21 April 2008. The construction of the 10-million-Euro project was executed by the consortium (ARGE) Züblin/Aarsleff, commissioned by Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock in summer of the previous year. The Ministry for Economic Affairs of Mecklenburg – Vorpommern funded the project in the amount of nearly seven million Euros. Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft contributed the co-financing amounting to over three million Euros.

“We are pleased to contribute to the increasing success of the cruise industry in Rostock-Warnemünde. The new berth P8 allows us to keep pace with international market developments, especially concerning of the size of cruise ships. Nearly half (56 of 116) of all port calls in 2008 will be by large cruise ships with a length ranging from 250 to 300 meters”, said Ulrich Bauermeister, Managing Director of Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock.

The first phase of construction was carried out from December 2007 to April 2008 a new sheet-pile wall with a length of 360 meters was constructed approximately 3 meters in front of the old wall and anchored on land. The ground was replaced along the entire length of the wall up to a depth of 21.60 meters with the help of a boring device. 500 boreholes spaced 1.05 meters apart were made along a length of 465 meters. Hard, marly soil was removed and gravel was filled into the overlapping boreholes. Beginning in December 2007, 17-meter-long sheet piles were vibrated into the underground. The space between the old and new walls was filled in with sand and gravel, and paved as a quay surface. The process resulted in the reclamation of 1200 square meters along a length of 360 meters. In March and April 2008, a water depth of approximately 10 meters was dredged in the area around the berth necessary for navigation.

In a second phase of construction continuing until the end of 2008, an additional length of 95 meters will be constructed in the same manner. The configuration of the berth P8 will be changed to incorporate a bend in the quay after a length of 412 meters, connecting an additional 53 meters of quay length.

For the hydraulic engineering work, 1700 tonnes of steel will be used for the sheet pile wall, and 1430 cubic meters of concrete for the quay. After completing the hydraulic engineering work, the quay surface will be developed including paving and installation of media connections, new gates and fences.
