American Classic Voyages (AMCV) has reported a net loss of $17.6 million, or $1.28 per share, on revenues of $191.5 million for the year ended Dec. 31, 1996, compared to a net loss of $9.6 million, or $0.70 per share, on revenues of $189.8 million for 1995.
The 1996 result also included a write-down of $38.4 million from AMCV’s decision to retire the Constitution and a gain of $11.7 million from the sale of the company’s Maison Dupuy Hotel. In a prepared statement, AMCV said that excluding the write-down and the sale, its net income would have been $494,000, or $0.04 per share.
The 1995 results also included a one-time charge of $5.9 million for costs associated with the introduction of the American Queen.
Fourth Quarter
AMCV reponed net income of $22.4 million, or $1.62 per share, on revenues of $50.2 million for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 1996, compared to net income of $197,000, or $0.01 per share, on revenues of $47.8 million for the same quarter in 1995.
In the fourth quaner of 1996, AMCV sold its hotel resulting in a gain of $11.7 million and recognized an $8 million tax adjustment, without which the company said it would have net income of $2.1 million.
