Star Cruises Grows to 8 ships

Star Cruise has purchased the Golden Princess from Birka Line after Princess Cruises completes its charter of the ship.

To be renamed the Super Star Capricorn, the 28,000-ton, 830-passenger former Royal Viking Sky was built in 1973, and also briefly did service as the Sunward for Norwegian Cruise Line, before being sold to Birka Line in 1992.

Star Cruise paid $50 million for the Golden Princess and plans to spend another $5 million to bring the ship to its “Super Star standard,” which includes raising the passenger capacity to 1,500.

Star Cruise offers three different cruise products, Star, Super Star, and Mega Star, and Super Star Capricorn will join the Super Star Gemini in the company’s traditional cruise product line-up.

The Capricorn will be deployed in Asia in 1997. The itinerary is currently being planned and will be announced shortly. The Gemini meanwhile sails six day cruises out of Singapore.

Star Cruise already operates five ships out of Singapore and has two 75,000-ton, 2,000-passenger ships under construction for delivery in 1998 and 1999, respectively
