How Large is the Cruise Industry?

Market Scope, the Miami-based research firm, has claimed that a recent survey by Louis Harris and Associates has overstated the size of the cruise industry by some 250 percent.

The survey reported that bookings through U.S. travel agents were $7.6 billion in 1985. However, Market Scope claims that, based on total industry capacity, it is not possible for bookings to amount to more than $2.5 billion annually for cruises from U.S. ports, or $3.1 billion for cruises from ports worldwide.
