Villa Vie Odyssey Captain Emanuele Giudice provided an update on the ship’s status after the ship’s operation was suspended and residents were sent ashore in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
As reported by Cruise Industry News, CEO Mikael Petterson told CBS that Villa Vie Residences plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to fuel costs spiking after the war with Iran began in late February.
Giudice said during an interview with the Cambodia China Times that the ship plans to leave Cambodia on October 31, adding that he was waiting for fuel.
The original departure was scheduled to be on October 28 at 7 PM, but this was delayed because fuel was not received.
Giudice stated that 203 passengers had to leave the ship because of a fuel shortage, due to which one generator and chiller needed to be shut down.
“This, of course, would have created discomfort for the residents, which we don’t want. So, we kindly asked the residents to get off the ship because our fuel situation was critical,” explained Giudice.
He noted that the passengers were given a 36-hour notice before having to leave the ship. They were later permitted to return to get their belongings.
Refusing to comment on who is to blame for the fuel prices, he noted that many passengers refused to pay the fuel surcharge, which created the current situation.
