TUI has canceled Mein Schiff 3’s planned trip to the Canaries due to the damage sustained in an incident at Bremerhaven port on October 25.
As reported by Cruise Industry News, Mein Schiff 3 collided with a cargo ship while leaving Bremerhaven in stormy conditions on Sunday evening on its way to the Canary Islands.
While initial reports indicated a collision between Mein Schiff 3 and a container ship, subsequent police reports stated that a total of three ships were involved, according to German media.
Caught by a gust of wind, Mein Schiff 3 is said to have initially collided with a smaller container ship, causing minor damage, and then drifted into a larger container ship, the MSC Victorine.
The port authority stated that this collision resulted in a crack approximately ten meters long in the container ship, while lifeboats, their associated cranes and the outer hull were damaged on the cruise ship.
At the time of the accident, there were 2,428 guests onboard, who disembarked on Monday morning, as well as 922 crew members.
On October 26, TUI confirmed that no one was injured in the incident, noting that the ship remains at the pier in Bremerhaven since the identified damage requires immediate repair work.
Technical teams and experts are examining the extent of the damage, based on which it will determine whether, and to what extent, subsequent voyages will be affected.
“This decision is extremely difficult for us. We know how much our guests have looked forward to this trip and deeply regret the associated inconveniences. At the same time, we are convinced that this is the only responsible decision to ensure our high safety standards,” TUI’s statement reads.
According to German media, the coastal police are now investigating the captain of the cruise ship for a possible regulatory offense.
