Marella Cruises: BTS Secrets of a Cruise Worker

  • October 15, 2026
Leopoldo Flores Cruise sound expert for Marella

Leopoldo Flores, cruise sound expert for Marella Cruises, has given a glimpse into what it takes to bring West End-style productions to life at sea, including the precision, preparation and teamwork required behind the scenes of every performance.

With years of live entertainment experience, Senior Sound Technician Flores now helps deliver up to 12 production shows during a typical 14-night cruise, ensuring every microphone, music cue and sound effect is timed for guests onboard.

“Every moment of a production is timed almost to the second,” he said. “From lighting and effects to automation and sound cues, there’s an incredible amount of coordination happening behind the scenes to make sure guests enjoy a seamless experience.”

And while customers see the finished performance, much of the work starts long before the curtain rises.

“My mornings usually begin with equipment checks in the theater to make sure everything is ready for the day’s activities and the evening shows,” he explained.

“Then we’ll carry out technical rehearsals before it’s showtime. During the performance, I’m operating the sound desk live, balancing vocals, tracks, the live band and effects in real time.”

According to Flores, one of the biggest challenges is preparing multiple productions within a short timeframe.

“One of the most demanding parts of the job is what we call the cast-install period, when up to 12 shows must be prepared and brought to life in a very short period,” he said. “It requires a huge amount of planning, teamwork and attention to detail.”

Flores said the variety of entertainment onboard is one reason cruise entertainment continues to grow in popularity.

“One of the things that sets Marella apart is the variety and quality of its production shows,” he said. “We offer 12 shows of West End-level production value, all featuring incredibly talented performers and supported by technical teams working behind the scenes.”

He said that customers can expect everything from full-scale musical productions to tribute acts and comedy performances during their holiday.

“One night you might see a full production show, the next a tribute act or a guest comedian,” he noted. “There really is something for everyone.”

For Flores, the most rewarding part of the role is helping create memorable experiences for guests.

“When everything comes together, and guests are enjoying the show, that’s what makes the job special,” he said.
