MSC held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 28 for Sandy Cay, its new private island destination in The Bahamas adjacent to Ocean Cay, with construction and site work already well underway ahead of a scheduled 2028 opening.

The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, and Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas, along with other government officials and project stakeholders.

First announced in April 2026, Sandy Cay sits adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve and is being developed exclusively for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

The company said the new island is designed to complement Ocean Cay with a more intimate, upscale experience centered on wellness and relaxation. Plans call for beaches, dining venues, relaxation spaces, private retreats and curated experiences.

MSC also announced upgrades at Ocean Cay, which has been a fixture on the brand’s Caribbean itineraries.

New additions will include more dining venues, new beach concepts for families and for adults, expanded relaxation areas and new experiences tied to the island’s marine conservation work.

According to the company, the two islands will operate as distinct destinations with their own character, giving MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests two private island options in The Bahamas.
