Who Bought the Oceania Sirena? Evaluating the Potential Buyers

  • August 1, 2026
Sirena

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced on Thursday that it had sold the 1999-built Oceania Sirena, with the ship set to change hands after its spring 2028 season. For now, the buyer remains under wraps.

As the ship is expected to enter service for its new owner in the peak summer 2028 season, deployment details will need to surface soon; both to maximize ticket pricing and to lock in port availability.

Multiple sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Cruise Industry News (CIN) that NCLH had been targeting a price in the high eight-figures for the ship.

As with most secondhand tonnage deals, the buyer is likely to be a non-competitor to NCLH’s trio of brands.

The Sirena is one of eight R-class sisters built for Renaissance Cruises between 1998 and 2001. As NCLH repositions its Oceania brand upmarket, four of those R-class ships now appear headed for new homes.

One source told CIN that a major European shipyard had recently completed a feasibility study to stretch an existing R-class vessel and repower it with new engines.

CIN sizes up the potential pool of buyers:

Azamara: Azamara already operates four R-class vessels, so a fifth would slot in to an already established operation. Chances to grow with matching hardware are few and far between, making the Sirena a potentially opportunistic play for the Sycamore-owned brand, which has already committed dollars to its Azamara Forward drydock program.

A 25 percent bump in capacity is significant, and the question is whether Oceania would be willing to hand a ship to Azamara in a market where tonnage is hard to get and the newbuild line at European yards runs a decade long.

Fred. Olsen: The line has long built its business on high-end secondhand tonnage and currently has three ships. Fred. Olsen is known for keeping its vessels in immaculate condition and for ambitious refits, stretching among them. The Sirena would be newer than anything in the current fleet, though considerably smaller at roughly 684 guests.

Ambassador: Ambassador Cruise Line has made no secret of its appetite for growth through secondhand acquisitions and is known to inspect available ships regularly. Alongside the Ambition, Ambience and Renaissance (CFC brand), the Sirena would be a smaller but a notably more premium product.

Cordelia: NCLH has already found a willing partner in India-based Cordelia Cruises, offloading two ships, the Norwegian Sky this year and the Sun in 2027. A recently completed IPO could give the line fresh capital to keep expanding.

Celestyal: A fixture in the secondhand market for years, Celestyal currently operates a pair of ships that previously flew AIDA and Holland America Line colors. The Sirena would be smaller than both the Celestyal Discovery and Journey.

Plantours: With just the Hamburg in its fleet, the German operator would find the Sirena a realistic and welcome step up in capacity.

Phoenix Reisen and Semester at Sea: The two operators have been sharing the 1998-built Deutschland, with Semester at Sea sailing the ship for most of the year and Phoenix Reisen taking the summer season. This summer marks the Deutschland’s farewell under Phoenix Reisen’s colors, raising the question of whether the arrangement could carry over to a larger, more modern vessel.

Somebody Else: Could an entirely new brand step forward with a secondhand ship? It would not be the first time a buyer emerged from outside the traditional cruise space, whether a first-time entrant or an established operator that competes with no one head-to-head.
