Viking Warns Guests of Itinerary Changes on Rhine River

  • August 17, 2026
Viking Longship Gymir Rhine River in Germany

Viking has notified guests of itinerary changes affecting the August 19, 2026, sailing of the Viking Idun.

According to a letter shared by booked passengers, the company said that low water levels on the Rhine River are expected to affect the upcoming sailing.

Sailing from Trier to Basel, the seven-night cruise includes visits to destinations in Germany, France and Switzerland.

“As you prepare for your journey, we want to make you aware that historically low water levels are currently affecting navigation on the Rhine River,” Viking stated.

“Viking is uniquely positioned to manage water-level situations such as these. Our nautical and operational experts monitor river conditions hourly,” the company said.

Viking said it has the “industry’s largest river fleet,” noting that it can often implement “ship swaps,” allowing guests and their luggage to transfer to the same stateroom on riverboats beyond an affected stretch of river.

“Together with our network of more than 100 docking locations and trusted hotels along our routes, these capabilities help us to minimize overall disruptions and preserve the experience our guests expect from Viking,” it added.

The company said that current conditions remain challenging, but weather patterns and resulting river levels can change rapidly.

As a result, these conditions cannot be predicted with certainty more than a few days in advance, Viking added.

“While it is still too early to confirm the full impact that water levels will have on your voyage, current water levels are still preventing regular navigation,” the company said.

Viking said that while other changes may still take place, passengers will need to change ships in Cochem, Germany, before transferring to Strasbourg, France, by motorcoach.

The company said that the change will be necessary due to low water levels near Maxau, a stop scheduled for Day 6 of the cruise.

Viking said that other potential changes include revised docking locations where piers are unavailable.

Shore excursion programs may also change, while some tours may need to be canceled, the company added.

“River conditions are dynamic and can change suddenly, for better or worse. Details that appear likely today may shift before your departure or during your itinerary,” Viking stated, noting that any necessary further changes will be confirmed onboard.

“We are committed to taking care of you throughout your journey and delivering the enriching and unique experience you have been anticipating,” the company added.
