Total Eclipse Seen by Oceanwide Guests in Northeast Greenland

  • August 16, 2026
Oceanwide Total Eclipse Sighting

Oceanwide Expeditions guests onboard two of the company’s vessels enjoyed a total eclipse in Scoresbysund, Northeast Greenland, on itineraries designed around the line of totality on August 12, 2026.

“It was really surreal, like someone flicked the switch to turn the lights off on the world. We were all in absolute awe; all passengers and crew just stood, utterly mesmerized,” said Gabi Kolodko, an Expedition Guide.

Watching the eclipse from the deck of the Hondius was Dr. Tyler Nordgren, retired professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Redlands.

“It was a spectacular success. We saw the most awe-inspiring sight in the most incredible location,” said Nordgren.

“Everyone onboard was over the moon, laughing and hugging one another. I always tell people who hope to see a total solar eclipse: go someplace you’ve always wanted to go, and if the weather is clear for totality, then it will be the cherry on top. That’s what we’ve all chosen to do by coming to Greenland. It’s been the trip of a lifetime,” added Nordgren.

The company said that the Hondius and Plancius positioned themselves in ScoresbySund for the centerpiece of two unique expedition itineraries, and the trips were designed around the event.

Both vessels proceeded into Øfjord. Guests were provided with viewing glasses, and the eclipse started at roughly 16:30 local time. The eclipse reached totality at 17:35 local time, with the entire eclipse lasting for around two hours.

The company said in a press release that both voyages were sold out in advance, offering a diverse range of interests onboard, and hosted astronomers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and global travelers.
