Semester at Sea announced a change of plans for its Spring 2027 World Voyage onboard the World Odyssey.

According to the company’s website, an originally planned visit to the port of Surabaya in Indonesia had to be cancelled due to new port access challenges.

Instead of visiting the destination, the World Odyssey will now spend five days docked at Penang in Malaysia.

Semester at Sea said that the destination has been visited by the ship before and serves as a gateway to the UNESCO Heritage Site of George Town.

“This change will not impact the length of the voyage, nor alter any other port arrival or departure times beyond those mentioned,” the company stated.

“We only make itinerary changes when absolutely necessary, but do so with the goal of providing you, your family and your home university with an itinerary that offers a one-of-a-kind global experience and education.”

Semester at Sea noted that, with the change, passengers will now be able to visit Malaysia’s top cultural and tourist destinations.

Starting in Thailand in early 2027, the 105-day voyage will feature visits to 11 countries before ending in Germany.

Twelve destinations across three continents will be visited by the World Odyssey, including ports in Southeast Asia, Africa and Northern Europe.

According to the company, the sailing will feature the perfect mix of classroom and field education with the academic program led by a team of academic experts from renowned institutions around the world.

As previously reported by Cruise Industry News, Semester at Sea recently opened bookings for its 2027 Fall cruise onboard the World Odyssey.

Sailing from the Netherlands, the ship is scheduled to offer a 104-day itinerary to destinations in Portugal, Morocco, Brazil, St. Helena and South Africa.

Before ending in Thailand, the voyage is also set to sail to additional ports in Asia, including Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
