River cruising in Central Europe continues to face disruptions due to adverse operating conditions, according to a report by Associated Press.

A prolonged drought is setting record low levels on the Danube River and other waterways in the region, the news source said.

In a recent social media update, Riviera Travel said that its teams continue to monitor river conditions and potential impacts on its operations.

“We know that news about changing river conditions may raise questions when you’re looking forward to a much-anticipated holiday. That’s why we wanted to reassure you about how we’re looking after your travel plans,” the company stated.

“Protecting your holiday experience is always our top priority,” Riviera added, noting that guests sailing after August 5 are being contacted prior to boarding.

“We’ll explain the latest plans and available options so you can decide what’s right for you,” the company added.

Riviera noted that guests may experience a revised route, a change to day plans or what it called a “seamless ship swap.”

According to a notice on its website, Avalon Waterways had to cancel departures of its “Danube Dreams” itinerary due to low water levels.

Scheduled to depart in late July, the sailings were cancelled due to lower-than-average water levels in the Danube and the Rhine rivers.

“Avalon has a long history of making every effort to keep cruise itineraries intact. When Mother Nature makes other plans, we work closely with our guests to present alternate experiences and opportunities, so they can determine how they’d like to navigate their next steps,” the operator said.

The German tour operator recently announced that it is offering guests the option to rebook river cruises for free on the Danube, Moselle and Rhine rivers departing up to August 12, 2026.

In late July, the Viking Ullur had to be evacuated after running aground on the Danube River with over 185 passengers and 50 crew members.

According to a local news agency, the riverboat became stranded while sailing near Vidin in Northwestern Bulgaria.
