Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has selected Series 2 turbocharger silencer filters produced by NorthWest Clean Air Company (NWCA) for the upcoming Norwegian Aura.
The ship was recently floated out at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. Once it debuts in May 2027, it is set to become the largest ship in NCL’s history.
Joining the Norwegian Viva, Aqua and Luna, the Aura becomes the fourth Prima Class vessel to utilize the sustainable Series 2 turbocharger filters, according to a statement.
This solution for turbocharger filtration replaces single-use throwaway filter material with a washable electromechanical filter element, which can ultimately lead to fuel savings.
As explained by NWCA, inadequate and poorly maintained turbocharger silencers intake filtration can result in the fouling of the charge air cooler, causing high exhaust gas temperatures and excessive fuel consumption.
Other brands that have selected these filters include Viking for the Mira and Vesta and Princess for the Star Princess.
Additionally, Cunard will add these filters to the Queen Anne, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and the Queen Mary 2 in 2026 and orders for the filters have been placed for P&O’s Ventura, Britannia, Arvia, Azura and Iona.
