Marella Cruises has shared a list of most common cruise mistakes made by first time cruisers and tips how to avoid them.
According to Michelle Kirkham, retail manager at TUI’s Brighton holiday store, there are still some misconceptions among those coming onboard for the first time, especially when it comes to the availability of options.
“People still think cruises are formal, old-fashioned or just for older travelers,” she said. “But modern ships are like floating resorts. There’s something for everyone, whether you want relaxation, adventure or a lively atmosphere.”
Kirkham stated that the biggest error people make is choosing purely based on price, adding that the secret is picking the right ship and experience first, with the ship taking precedence over the itinerary.
“You spend most of your time onboard, so the ship really shapes your holiday. Whether you want something relaxed, family friendly or adults only, that choice makes all the difference,” she explained.
Kirkham also revealed that many customers misunderstand what’s included in the price, not knowing that optional things like drinks packages, excursions and Wi-Fi can cost extra.
Cabin choice is another area that can impact the experience onboard. She suggested picking a balcony cabin if the budget allows, as the sea views elevate the experience.
Her top tip for first-time cruisers is to plan the essentials without overthinking it.
“Cruising is designed to be effortless. Once you’re onboard, relax and enjoy it.”
Kirkham also highlighted a Mediterranean itinerary, such as Marella’s Highlights of the Mediterranean aboard the Marella Discovery 2, as a great option for first-time cruisers.
“It’s got real bucket list appeal,” she noted. “You’re seeing some of Europe’s most famous destinations in one holiday, with minimal sea days, so there’s always something to explore. It’s a brilliant introduction to cruising.”
