Velarca, an Isola Corvus company, launched the Velarca Explorer, a 32-guest, 100-meter-long luxury expedition newbuild concept developed in response to a shifting expedition market, on June 19, 2026.

The company said that the expedition market is being shaped by tighter environmental expectations, evolving guest behavior and increasing demand for quieter, less congested forms of exploration. It did not elaborate on a projected launch date for the ship.

In response to this, the new ship concept is designed for up to 32 guests and supported by a crew of 32, deliberately moving away from the scaling trend seen across the segment.

The Finnish maritime venture said in a press release that at this size, the vessel begins to operate more like a private platform for exploration than a traditional expedition ship, prioritizing space, time and proximity to the environment over volume and capacity.

“The guests we are designing for have already experienced comfort. What they are looking for now is something less familiar, journeys that feel remote, considered and difficult to replicate. That requires a different kind of vessel, not just a larger one,” said Sami Lehtonen, CEO, Isola Corvus.

“When we began developing the Velarca Explorer, we were less interested in scale and more interested in clarity,” said Shalome Relander, creative and marketing director, Velarca.

“What does expedition travel look like when you remove the pressure to carry more people, more amenities, more noise? The answer led us to something quieter and more deliberate.”

Developed from a design brief created by Velarca, the concept was realized in collaboration with Tim Ulrich and the team at Beiderbeck Designs.

The concept emerged from Velarca’s ongoing research into the future of expedition travel and the operational realities of long-range, low-impact navigation.

The result is a vessel for fewer guests, fewer distractions and a more direct relationship with the sea, the company added.

At the heart of the ship concept is a hybrid propulsion architecture designed around three complementary operating modes: electric propulsion, wind-assisted propulsion through the Velarca Rig system and biodiesel-powered operation.

The Velarca Explorer concept is currently being advanced through discussions with prospective owners, shipyards and specialist technical partners.
