Mitsui Sells Nippon Maru Furniture After Retiring the Vessel

MOL O.S.K. Lines offered guests an opportunity to purchase furniture and items from the Nippon Maru before retiring the vessel in May.

According to a press release, the sales were part of the “Nippon Maru Memorial Goods Project,” which aimed at preserving the history of the 1990-built vessel.

Mitsui said that the items that were used onboard the ship could become cherished mementos for passengers and crew.

Most of the products were sold in their original form, including coffee tables from the vessel’s Horizon Lounge and other commemorative offerings.

Mitsui also allowed guests to purchase chairs that were in use on the ship’s bridge, as well as decorative pieces and general signaling items.

Furniture from Nippon Maru’s restaurants, lounges, cabins and outside decks was also offered, including deck chairs and side tables.

The initiative  included items that were removed and repurposed before being offered for sale, such as table, wall, and floor lamps created with light fixtures from various decks of the ship.

Other items include keychains created with crystals from the vessel’s chandeliers, as well as art pieces that use lifebuoys, clocks and ropes from the ship. Curtains from different areas were also used to create keychains, pens, wristwatches, and more.

After leaving the Far East earlier this month, the Nippon Maru is expected to be scrapped at the Alang Ship Breaking Yard.

AIS data shows the vessel, which was recently renamed Mary, sailing to India’s Bhavnagar region under the Comoros flag.

After spending over three decades sailing for the company, the Nippon Maru was retired from the Mitsui Ocean Cruises fleet on May 10, 2026.

The retirement was marked by a ceremony in Yokohama, which attracted over 7,000 visitors, including former passengers and admirers of the ship.

Mitsui is now getting ready to welcome a new ship to its fleet with the Mitsui Ocean Sakura, which is scheduled to debut on September 19, 2026.
