HX CEO Visits China, Reaffirms Asia as Strategic Growth Priority

  • June 30, 2026
CEO Gebhard Rainer

HX has reaffirmed Asia as part of its growth strategy with CEO Gebhard Rainer recently in the country and visiting Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.

The trip consisted of “Explorer Luncheons” with trade partners, reaffirming HX’s positioning of China as a “cornerstone” of its global expansion and regional investment strategy.

The company’s pitch to Chinese high-net-worth travelers is a balance of shore landings and a culturally-immersion product aboard; it brands this internally as the “China Ready” strategy.

During the visit, Rainer emphasized that “China Ready” goes beyond translated menus and Mandarin announcements and that it covers:

  • Pre-voyage education (HX has a partnership with the University of Tasmania for a Chinese version of the Antarctic education program)
  • Full-time Chinese-speaking expedition teams, and
  • Shorex pacing tuned to Chinese holiday patterns.

Joe Zou, HX’s vice president of commercial, Asia-Pacific, said that as China’s luxury travel market tilts toward inspirational expedition experiences, the local team is doubling down on trade support: joint marketing, tailor-made agent training and a product that pairs HX’s 130-year polar heritage.

The timing of the visit aligned with HX’s 2027-28 Antarctica season commercial planning, and the company used it to deepen varoious trade agreements.

HX also used the trip to address the “bigger = worse landing logistics” perception issue. The company briefed Chinese partners on its high-frequency landingmodel and its full-time Chinese expedition staff, arguing that, in HX’s case, ship size does not bottleneck landings.
