Carnival Brings Cruise Ship LNG Bunkering to Latin America

Carnival Jubilee

The Carnival Jubilee has been refueled using a mobile liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling solution at Carnival Corporation’s Isla Tropicale exclusive destination in Roatán, Honduras.

In a statement, the cruise line said this is an industry first as it introduces bunkering as a new maritime fueling capability to Latin America and the Western Caribbean.

Roatán’s location is said to enable LNG-capable ships to refuel with what Carnival says are minimal disruptions to their routes.

“This milestone reflects the collaboration and operational planning taking place worldwide within our organization to expand LNG bunkering across our global fleet,” said Michael McNamara, vice president, strategic sourcing – fuel, for Carnival Corporation.

“Bringing this capability to Latin America and the Western Caribbean supports key itineraries in the region while advancing our broader strategy to reduce emissions. We are grateful to President Asfura, government leaders and local partners for helping make this milestone possible.”

The milestone is in line with the company’s broader decarbonization strategy, aiming to reduce its emissions footprint while pursuing net zero greenhouse gas emissions from ship operations by 2050.

“LNG bunkering in Roatán reflects the important role Honduras can play in the future of maritime energy in the Western Caribbean,” said Miguel Ángel Gámez, director general of hydrocarbons and biofuels.

“This achievement and milestone strengthens Roatán’s position as a strategic destination, supports Honduras’ broader energy and economic development priorities and demonstrates the value of public-private collaboration. It is also an important step forward toward a cleaner, more affordable and more resilient national energy matrix.”

Eight years after the AIDAnova became the first cruise ship in the world to be powered by LNG while both at sea and in port, Carnival now has 11 LNG-capable cruise ships in operation.

Seven additional LNG-capable ships are scheduled to join the fleet by 2033.
