Wärtsilä Water & Waste has introduced a grease trap solution that supports wastewater management onboard.
Called the Grease Trap, this is a modular product designed to separate fats, oils and grease from galley wastewater streams onboard merchant vessels, cruise ships and offshore platforms.
Available as of May 2026, the solution supports improved wastewater management and contributes to protection of the marine environment, Wärtsilä said in a statement.
“The Grease Trap – GM Series addresses a routine but important aspect of onboard operations,” said Fraser Scott, managing director, Wärtsilä Water & Waste.
“Separating grease at source is essential for maintaining reliable wastewater system performance onboard, helping to reduce the risk of blockages and unplanned maintenance while supporting consistent downstream treatment and more responsible wastewater handling at sea.”
The system operates using a gravity-based separation process, with wastewater entering the unit where solids settle.
With lower density grease rising to the surface and being retained within a dedicated collection chamber, the clarified water then passes through the vessel’s discharge system.
Available in four sizes to suit different vessel requirements, the solution is suitable for both newbuild projects and retrofit applications and varying sizes, Wärtsilä noted.
