Viking Sea Marks Ten Years of Service

Viking Sea

The Viking Sea recently celebrated its tenth year of service for Viking Cruises, after becoming the second vessel in the company’s ocean fleet.

Built at Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard in Italy’s Adriatic coast, the luxury ship was delivered on March 24, 2016.

Following initial sailings in the Mediterranean and Western Europe, the 930-passenger vessel was christened during a ceremony on the Thames River in Greenwich.

Karine Hagen, daughter of Viking’s founder Torstein Hagen, served as the vessel’s godmother during the festivities, which took place on May 5, 2016.

The ceremony also included concerts from Norwegian soprano Sissel and The Olav’s Choir, in addition to a fireworks display.

As part of its inaugural season, the Viking Sea offered a series of cruises to Scandinavia and the Baltic, which were followed by itineraries in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.

In 2026, the 47,000-ton vessel is offering similar itineraries in Europe as part of its summer deployment, featuring departures from a range of homeports.

Over the next few months, the ship is scheduled to offer cruises sailing from ports in Spain, Italy, Turkey and Greece, including Tarragona, Chioggia, Istanbul and Piraeus.

Set to spend the 2026-27 winter season in the Caribbean, the Viking Sea will offer a repositioning voyage to Puerto Rico in October.

Sailing from Barcelona to San Juan, the 13-night cruise will be followed by a series of ten-night cruises to the Eastern Caribbean.

In December, the ship will also offer a special 21-night voyage to South America and the Amazon, highlighted by visits to destinations in Brazil, French Guiana and Tobago.

The Viking Sea was followed by 11 other similar ships, including the Viking Vesta, which was delivered by Fincantieri in 2025.

Viking is now getting ready to welcome two additional vessels in the series in 2026: the Viking Mira and the Viking Libra.

The latter will be the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, capable of operating with zero emissions.

The company has ten more ocean ships on order with Fincantieri through 2031, including two new expedition vessels.
